Loel Z. Payne, M.D.

Shoulder & Knee

Dr. Loel Payne has been with Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton, VA for over 20 years, having joined the practice in 1995. His approach to treating patients is to provide the most up-to-date specialized care available and the compassion he would want administered to a member of his own family. He specializes in the elbow, knee, and shoulder and is known around the practice as the “shoulder guy.”

Dr. Payne was born in North Carolina where he played basketball throughout his youth. Through sports, he had the opportunity to witness sports injuries treated by local orthopaedic surgeons; he was fascinated by the ability of those injured to return to sports. Dr. Payne majored in biomedical engineering at Duke University, where he played one semester for the Duke Blue Devils basketball team under Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K) before attending medical school at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill. For his postgraduate training, Dr. Payne was awarded a spot in the orthopaedic residency program at Yale School of Medicine. Following, he did his fellowship training in shoulder surgery and sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, New York. While completing his fellowship, Dr. Payne had the opportunity to work with the New York Mets.

Shoulder and knee doctor, Loel Z. Payne, M.D., sees patients in Hampton, VA as well as Williamsburg, VA.

Nothing makes Dr. Payne happier than seeing a patient who was in restricting pain resume the things they love to do. In his spare time, Dr. Payne loves to spend quality time with his family, which includes a spring break trip every year. He has three wonderful children, currently in college, with his wife Christine, whom he met while studying at Yale University.
