Dr. Colin Kingston, knee and sports medicine surgeon at Tidewater Orthopaedics, was the area’s first surgeon to perform a joint replacement procedure in an ambulatory surgery center, and he is now offering outpatient total knee replacements at the CarePlex Orthopaedic Ambulatory Surgery Center in Hampton. Dr. Kingston strives to always be at the forefront of orthopaedics, so he is proud to bring the area this innovative technique, which allows patients to go home just hours after surgery.

Advances in anesthesia, pain management and surgical techniques are allowing orthopaedic surgeons to develop total joint replacement programs in outpatient settings. According to Dr. Kingston, this setting for joint replacement is the way of the future. While most of these programs can be found in large cities and university health systems, the doctors and staff at CarePlex Orthopaedic Ambulatory Surgery Center have worked tirelessly to bring a top quality program such as this to the local community.

Advantages of the outpatient total joint replacement program include:

  • Increased patient satisfaction as recovery takes place in comfort of their home
  • Reduced cost due to elimination of hospital stay
  • Reduced risk of infection when recovering at home versus in a hospital setting

Tek Seng Kwa is a 57-year-old patient who got both knees replaced. He said,  “This was a life-changing experience. The arthritis pain no longer limits me! I was up and walking 45 minutes after surgery and heading home a couple hours later.”

Another patient, Christopher Vest, said, “I have trusted Dr. Kingston with my orthopaedic care for 10 years, and when we finally decided it was time to have my knees replaced, it was a no-brainer to do it in the outpatient setting. The process at the surgery center was extremely smooth, and every single detail was taken care of! The surgery itself was extremely successful. Dr. Kingston knew it would be hard to keep me down for long, as I am very active, so he said this was the perfect procedure for me.”

William “André” Gilliam got both of his knees replaced two weeks apart and said, “I had confidence in Dr. Kingston’s skills, and it was his bedside manner that won me over. Then, it went beyond him. The entire staff was exceptional. Anytime I had a question or concern, they went above and beyond to make sure everything was taken care of.”

As part of the experience, CarePlex Orthopaedic Ambulatory Surgery Center offers an unprecedented concierge program, which gives patients 24/7 access to medical staff and scheduled in-home visits from the home healthcare team and physical therapists.
